News and interesting facts about Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day, the day of the lovers. And like any celebration, it brings with it unexpected news and funny  facts:

- Valentine's Day has its roots in the pagan festival called "Lupercalia", during which the men were stripped naked, and with a whip they hit young women in an attempt to increase their fertility.

- "Our" Verona, the city of Romeo and Juliet, receives about 1000 letters addressed to Juliet every year.

- A recent survey has revealed that one young person out of 10 admits to feel alone, insecure, depressed and not liked during Valentine's Day.

- Men spend on gifts twice as women do.

- About 9 million owners of dogs, cats or other pets will buy a gift for their animal.

- 15% of American women will send some flowers to themselves.

- In the U.S., the sale of condoms increases from 20 to 30% during the days foregoing Valentine's Day.

- In Japan, women give chocolate to their partners, (tradition started by japanese companies producing chocolate) who will return the favor on March 14, known in japan as "White Day".

- 73% of flowers sold are bought by men, while women seem to prefer postcards and greeting cards.

- In Wales, the traditional Valentine's gift is a wooden spoon, called the love spoon.

- The greatest love gift ever is the Taj Mahal in India, built by the Emperor Shanjahan as a memorial for his wife, who died during childbirth.

- Every year, people send about a billion Valentine's greeting card all over the world.

- Many weird kissing competitions take place during Valentine's Day. A kiss lasting 30 hours has joined The Guinness Book of Records.
